Fistula

Fistula is a complicated and painful condition in rectum. And it’s harsh too. The scientific definition is “A fistula is an abnormal connection between two body parts, such as an organ or blood vessel and another structure”. Arteriovenous fistula, Anal fistula and Obstetric fistula are the most common types of fistula. These are fewer than 1 million cases per year (India).

We have some misconception about piles and fistula. Many of us are confused for one another and consider both are same. Which is not true. While piles is swollen blood vessels surrounding the anal canal, fissure is a tear or crack in the tissue of the anus and fistula is an abnormal tunnel between the anus and the surrounding skin.

There is not any particular reason for fistulas. Sometimes fistulas may be the result of an injury, Injury to the anal canal. Infection or inflammation, surgery can also cause a fistula to form..

Fistula is basically an abnormal connection between organs. And it can cause a lot of discomfort and also it needs to be treated well. If it left untreated, it may cause serious complications. Some fistulas can cause a bacteria infection, which may result in sepsis, a dangerous condition that can lead to low blood pressure, organ damage and many more. If you have fistula you need to maintain dryness in the anal region.

Fistula will not heal on its own, we have to choose surgical treatments to cure the fistula. But a proper diet like, consuming a fibre-rich diet and regular proper exercise gives you relief from fistula.
